GoDaddy, Elephant Killing, and Plight of Zimbabweans

Couple of days back I heard a very disturbing piece of news, and then I saw a video, which was even more disturbing. In that video, I saw a man with a blazing gun in his hands and then I heard sounds of two shots being fired followed by a sound of shutter closing, and there I saw elephant lying dead and a man resting the shining butt of his hunting rifle near the neck of the dead elephant with a black baseball cap worn reversed and a broad grin on his face. I cannot claim to realize the plight of getting shot twice in the guts, but I tried to empathize.

The man with a heavy build and broad smile was Bob Parsons, CEO of GoDaddy.com, the giant of domain registration and web hosting industry. He was clicked with his “prize” many times, and in some he was resting his tired butt on the neck of dead animal. And all through the while a broad and confident smile danced on his lips.

This disturbed me more. I didn’t wish to be sharing space (in the industry) with a guy, who has just taken a life, and I am told this was not the first time he did so, and I wish this could be the last. The shutter sounds faded out to become daylight and the next scene was more disturbing.

Poor Zimbabwean people were butchering the dead elephant for their food. This was more disturbing, and I am certain that in other times in other places they would not have doing so, but their hunger and poverty made them do so. And moreover, the irony was that these poor folks were wearing the crown of modernity – “Godaddy branded” orange color baseball caps.

Our Reaction

Then and there I decided to help, but I didn’t wanted my reaction to be too emotional to be really effective, so I took a couple of days time and decided to offer help to Zimbabwean people, to educate them, to help them have a better life, to get access to modern technology, so that they do not need to depend on killing animals to protect their farm yields and for food.

I wanted to help people of Zimbabwe as well as animals sharing space with us. And as I take it, this could only be done (even saving disappearing animals) if we make lives of people better.

How you can help

The sooner I found this solution I reared up a program for transferred-in domains (Read the press release here: Transfer Domain to Gossimer and Help Poor in Zimbabwe.

As per the program, Gossimer will be giving $1.00 for every domain name transferred from Godaddy to Gossimer to Zimbabwe Program of ASAP Africa Program, so that we can support people of Zimbabwe.  We will continue this donation effort for at least the next 10,000 domain names transfered-in from Godaddy.

ASAP Africa is working in Africa since 1992, and has helped many communities there. We are also taking their help to make lives of Zimbabweans better.

Join us in the noble cause. Transfer your domains to Gossimer. Transfer as many as you can, and the more you will transfer the more we will be able to give to poor people who were made to wear “Godaddy branded” orange color baseball caps.

By the way, 64% people of Zimbabwe live their life below poverty line, i.e., they make less than USD 1 per day.

We together can help them. Join our cause!
