Blogging and Social Media

The doomsayers are flat out wrong!

Social Media has become such a huge phenomenon, and many proclaimed that the rise of social media will kill blogging the way television killed the radio, or the Internet killed magazine, the newspaper, and what not. But, this time the doomsayers were flat out wrong.

Blogging did not go away, and social media didn’t become the blog-killer. It didn’t, and both co-existed amiably. What doomsayers forgot to realize that blog has a different purpose than social media. If I could draw a leaf from our life to understand what these people were saying then I will say if blogging is like the magazine you read then social media is akin to meeting you have with your friends, or may be a conference you attend.

How can a conference or friends’ gathering replace the need of magazines?

It cannot. Both are different. Rather the readership of magazine will increase because of word of mouth phenomena cutting loose during social gathering. And that is what has happened to blogging. Now more and more people are blogging on variety of different topics.

Social media has fueled the growth of blogging. Now more and more people are using their blogs to express themselves. Social media along with its status messages has brought writer out of every person. Earlier you couldn’t imaging people saying things that you see them writing on their Facebook walls.

Social media may be huge in its own right, but when it comes to blogging, even a force like Facebook is subservient to blogging.  Facebook is used by the bloggers to promote them, and it doesn’t work in the opposite direction. Facebook, twitter, MySpace, and the rest have turned into mere tool for bloggers to promote themselves.

What do you think about this? Has social media become the force or will become the force that will take the place of blogging? Use the comment box below and write in.

What Content Strategy Do You Use? (Know What Big Guns Are Using)

Content is the serum on which the Internet survives, and this is the most time-consuming activity as well. That is why even seasoned marketers flinch when we talk about constantly updating content at various places.

It is not just you who is so much bothered about the frequency of his website’s content. Everyone is equally worried of the same. To put your worries to an end, I have done some digging on the Internet, and I happened to find a study conducted by MarketingSherpa to find the content strategy used by B2B marketing guys. I believe this study will equally help a B2C marketing guy.

According the result shown in the study (see image below), 64% of B2B marketers believe in repurposing and reformatting existing content. This in my view is not the best of the strategy, when seen particularly from the point of view of Google and how it is finding and eliminating duplicate content from its system.

how-you-update-content

Another most used strategy is encouraging customers to add up to the content. This is used by 53% of the marketers, and it could be a better strategy, but not the best because the quality produced by users may not be of high-quality. And low-quality content may get you whipped by Google.

The study suggests that 48% get it written by people in organization and 27% outsource it. It’s is by far a good strategy, and scores over the rest. What do you think about it? Which strategy do you think is better?

HQ Content – A New Wave in SEO

The days of auto-blogs, low-quality sites, duplicate content and spun articles are numbered. Starting with the big daddy Google, all the major search engines are delisting the websites that do not add value to customers’ experience of the website.

Becoming the torch-bearer of the new change, Google has made some changes in its algorithm to exclude websites with low-quality content from its SERP. Following suit, a lesser search engine Blekko has banned more than 1.1 million for the same reason. Are we witnessing a new change?

I guess so!

So how SEO will change in this new light?

SEO will significantly change, and content will gain more importance. Thanks to the improved algorithm. So far backlink was all an SEO expert was concerned with. And for him content was evil, which was necessary because in its absence, Google will not rank his or his client’s website. Such SEO experts cared less about people’s experience.

All of this is going to change now. People are going to get high-quality content in return to the keyword phrase they enter in the search box.

Who is going to benefit

In the light of this new change, people with good writing ability are going to benefit. It will be tough time for people who worked as an article production machine. They are the ones responsible for adding up to the trash littered on the Internet.

What will be the new SEO game like?

Backlinks as usual will be important. But backlinks alone will not cut it for poor webmasters. They need to have high-quality content on their website as well. Website design is also equally important – the new Google Instant Preview feature has made it must for a website to look good should it want to be visited.

2011 has brought a set of changes in search algorithm. SEO experts must update their knowledge and include these changes, or else they might go the dinosaur’s way, which leads to extinction.

How to find a Killer Domain Name

In the previous article, we discussed in length about the validity of a keyword-rich domain name, and why you need to have a keyword-rich domain name for the success of your business. Just knowing why will not cut it for some of the readers of this blog, so I am going to tell you “How” part of the story as well. In this article, I am going to tell you how you can find a killer domain name for your business.

Step 1: What kind of website will you create

This is the very first step in the process of finding a killer domain for your future website is to know what kind of website you want to create and who is your target audience. Make a dummy profile of your target audience.

Step 2: Do keyword research

The next step is to conduct a keyword research based on the central theme of your business. You should find a keyword which has good search volume and decent competition. Make a list of 10-20 keywords, or even more. I am asking you to make the list long because there is a fair chance that most of the keyword-rich domains are already taken.

Step 3: Make a list of modifiers

You also need to make a list of suffixes, prefixes, and other modifiers to make your domain unique. Make a list of modifiers relevant to your business.

Step 4: Check if the domain name is available

Now you can use a domain search tool to look for the available domain. See if you can get a .COM domain. If your strategy permits, you can also go for country-specific domain.

Step 5: Register the available one

Register your domain with a trust-worthy domain name registration company. Go with the one that offers best rate. You can check Gossimer.com to register your domain. It gives you a very good rate on domain registration.

This is all you need to do to get a killer domain for your business.

Why You Need to Have a Keyword-Rich Domain Name?

Rose by any other name would not have smell so sweet, no matter what Mr. Shakespeare said. The time has changed and name holds a lot of importance in how much one is being recognized, and how many people will interact with the entity. Because of all the noises that we see around, we all have started taking shortcuts in making decisions, and judging the quality on the basis on some entity’s name is one such shortcut. This holds true for domain names as well.

But, why do we need a keyword-rich domain name?

Will not any other kind of name do the trick? The answer is resounding NO, with a possible exception of a handful of websites which worked may be because

  1. They were first in their kind of business
  2. They had too big a budget to educate people on the nature of their business, or
  3. They had innovative products that immediately caught people’s fancy.

If you do not have any of the above condition, you should think about getting a domain name that says something about your business. If you again repeat this question that why you need a keyword-rich domain name to make your business success then I would say because:

  1. A non keyword-rich domain may sound sexy, but it will tell nothing about your business to your prospective customers, and as their minds are already too crowded, none of them will bother to spend time in decoding your name.
  2. Not only human, even machines (read search engine bots) will have hard time to figure out the nature of your website. So they will not be able to rank your website properly.

I think these two reasons are good enough to take some time out to find keyword-rich domain names for your website.

In the article that will follow this one, I will talk about the ways in which you can find a killer domain names for your business. Till them try to wrap your mind around this fact, which might have made you uncomfortable. And a rose with a name bitter gourd would not have tasted that sweet.

3 Link Building Tips

Links are good, but some links are better than other links, and some links are even better. This is no longer a debate. It was settled long back when Google started making the webmasters dance on its algorithmic tune. But the question is not everyone knows what conclusion has been drawn from the debate on link building? What were the factors that were considered most important? In this article, I will talk about 3 such things

3 Link building Tips

Link should be permanent

Gone are the days when renting high PR link for 3 months would have given you a sudden permanent rise in your ranking. Renting high PR link may give you temporary rise, but the ranking boost you will get from such links will fade away as soon as your rented link is removed. So do not waste time, money, and energy on such links, eye only permanent links.

Mix the keywords in anchor texts

Do all your friends define you using the same word? Do all of them call you by the same name? I doubt they do. This is pretty natural for us to be referred by different names and words. Even search bots know this, and that is why they start discounting the value of a website as soon as they start finding a pattern in anchor texts. If all your links contains same keyword then instead of boosting your ranking it will make them plummet. Keep in mind to mix keywords in anchor texts, and even have some naked links.

Quality of linking site

In every walk of life quality is given more importance over quantity, except democracy where each vote is counted equal. But when it comes to ranking a page Google and other search engines thankfully do not believe in democracy, and it has different value attached to links coming from different sources. It is, therefore, important that you focus on getting links from high-quality websites and not only from any website.

You must keep these three things in mind every time you go out on the Internet to build links for your website. You will see a slow but sure rise in ranking over the period of time, without spending too much of time online.
