Why to Blog?

Why should I blog is one of the most basic questions asked by a blogging newbie, and also by serious academicians and researchers who feel this is a sheer waste of time. Today morning was the last time I heard about this from a friend of mine who is associate professor in Georgia State University, and author of quite some books. His words were, “why would I want to tell the world which shampoo did I buy today?” I talked him into blogging, and he showed his inclination towards writing about the situation in Atlanta.

The conversation I had with my friend made me think about this issue, and then I decided to write a post to build a case in favor of blogging.

Reason 1: You should use blog as a tool to express what you think, and inform people about the issue you think is important for either all of us, or for any one community.

Reason 2: You can also resort to blogging, if you want to promote your product, services or any social cause.

Reason 3: Helping others is a noble thought, and blogging can play a very critical role in disseminating awareness about any issue. Each one of us goes through some trying situations in life, and some of us are better off in dealing with them than others; hence; it is our duty to share this knowledge with people who are not better off in handling such situations, and blogs can be very useful in that.

Reason 4: People also use blogging as a tool to establish themselves as experts in their chosen fields. It is a great way to show your expertise.

Reason 5: Blogging is also used to bring like-minded people to discuss about a topic. It helps you connect with people who think like you.

Reason 6: Blogging can a powerful tool in seeding a radical thought or swaying votes. If you are a powerful blogger, you can use this expertise to influence people’s thinking about a certain issue or a political party.

Reason 7: Your blog does not only help you share what you know with others, but the resultant effect of blogging can also help you in staying up-to-date on the things you care about.

Reason 8: You can also use blogging to stay connected with your friends and family.

Reason 9: Having fun and flexing your creative muscle can also be a reason to blog. People use their blogs to show their creativity and also to have fun.

Reason 10: This indeed is last on the list, but by no means we can call it the least important. A large number of people choose blogging because they want to make money from it. Most of them do not succeed in making money is altogether a different story.

GOSSIMER OFFERS UNLIMITED E-MAILS FOR $1

Browns Mills, NJ., July 25, 2009 – Gossimer, the fastest growing web hosting and domain name registration company, has recently unveiled its The Ultimate Email Plan.  The company has positioned this product as the ultimate e-mail solution that will fulfill the varied demands of different individuals as well as businesses of all sizes (from small proprietary businesses to mid-size organizations to large corporations).

For $1 per month, The Ultimate Email Plan offers unlimited e-mail accounts, total DNS control, virus protection, spam protection, online address book, folder management, mailing lists, vacation auto-responders, email forwards, aliases, unlimited POP3 & IMAP access, SMTP access, email server flooding protection, mail bomb protection, web-based email access, easy-to-use control panel, and many other important features required to operate the email accounts safely.

By placing the Ultimate Email Plan at a price point of $1 per month, Gossimer has taken a strong step towards making a dent in the forte of web-based e-mail providers. The product is well-positioned to target users and organizations who in the absence of cost-effective professional mail IDs use email IDs given by free web-based email providers to conduct businesses.

“A ‘cooldude@znail.com,’ or a ‘sexykitten@wahu.com’ may look cool when we communicate with our friends, but when it comes to business or getting a job then this kind of mail IDs backfires, big-time. The Ultimate Email Plan will give the ‘cooldude’ and the ‘sexykitten’ a ‘hisname@hisname.com’ or ‘hername@hername.com’ mail ID. This professional looking mail ID will increase his or her chance of getting the business or the job he or she is applying for,” said Dreyer.

He further explained this decision by adding, “We have positioned the Ultimate Email Plan as ‘no-upgrade’ e-mail solution. The price point of $1 per month will help us in penetrating the professional email-user segment.”

From now onward, getting a professional email ID for every individual in your organization is going to be easy and cost-effective. The Ultimate Email Plan is also offered free with Gossimer’s Ultimate Hosting Plan. Gossimer has removed any artificial disk space, bandwidth, FTP users, and database space caps from its hosting plan. This Ultimate Hosting Plan is one of the highly extensible web hosting plans around.

SEO SIMPLIFIED: Anchor Text Primer

After a brief pause of one week, SEO Simplified series is back, and this time we will talk about off-site SEO optimization. I hope, by now, you must have sorted out most of the issues related to on-site SEO optimization, and applied the principles learnt to make your website search engines’ darling. If you feel you need further clarification on any topic we have covered so far in the series, please feel free to use the comment box. .

I will begin with describing anchor text. I have chosen this beginning because, I believe, links back to our websites from the websites in same or related niche are what we want from our off-site optimization effort.

What is Anchor Text?

Before talking about what anchor text is, let us understand the anatomy of an HTML link. A link has two parts: one is the text on which the URL is attached, and another is the URL to which the user will be taken once he clicks the visible text. The URL is not visible to the users.

For example, we want to create a link that will take the visitors to the beginning of the SEO Simplified Series; hence, we create an SEO Simplified: An Overview link. In this case, the HTML Code for the link will be:

<a href = “http://www.gossimer.com/blog/seo-simplified-an-overview”> SEO Simplified: An Overview </a>

As we can see the text “SEO Simplified: An Overview” is visible to us, but the URL to which this text is pointing is not visible. In this case the URL is, “.The visible part (text) of the link is called anchor text. In the above example, “SEO Simplified: An Overview” is an anchor text for the link “http://www.gossimer.com/blog/seo-simplified-an-overview”.

Why is it important?

An anchor text works as a billboard for the attached URL. Anchor Text is used to tell the visitors what the URL within the anchor text is all about. To draw an analogy we can say, anchor text is like the subject line of an e-mail. A good anchor text is as important as is a good subject line of an e-mail.

Not only that, search engines especially Google attach a great value to the link attached to a proper anchor text. Suppose, in the above example if we replace the anchor text “SEO Simplified: An Overview” with “Click Here to Read” then the value of link and anchor text will be diminished in the eyes of search engines, especially Google.

Now let us think that this series has become very famous among SEO aspirants on the internet, and many websites has started stared pointing to “http://www.gossimer.com/blog/seo-simplified-an-overview” link using “SEO Simplified: An Overview” as an anchor text then eventually, “SEO Simplified: An Overview” page will rank higher in the search engine for the keywords “SEO Simplified: An Overview” and for the keyword “SEO Simplified”.

IMPORTANT

Always use a proper keyword or a key phrase when creating an internal link, or an in-bound link from other website. This can make the difference!

Difference between Public Relation and Advertising

Public Relation or PR (as it is better known) and Advertising are two major vehicles of sponsored mass communication. Public relation and advertising use different sets of tool, yet they together serve the same purpose. They help organization in communicating some key messages to people at large.

Every organization that needs to talk to common man must use at least these two vehicles of mass communication. Despite its pervasive use, people often get confused when it comes to differentiating one form another. Through this article, I will try to present the inherent difference between advertising and public relation. This is done to save you from any future confusion.

  1. Public relation, as the PR professionals will say, is in the business of image management and enhancement. It also helps organization in building and establishing long lasting links with its stakeholders. In the time of crisis, it also help in protecting the image of the company. On the other hand, advertising is said to be a medium that company uses to inform the public about new products and new imitative. This medium is said to be more persuasive.
  2. Public Relation is a third party endorsement of a company, which [third-party endorsement] injects more credibility in the message, whereas, advertising is direct company to consumer communication. Hence, it has more authority, but in the bad weather, advertising can be seen as lying device. Public relation is immune from it, as in most of the cases, there is no direct link connecting the message with the company.
  3. Publications, news coverage, magazine articles, blog posts, blog comments, forum postings, speech, interviews, public services, press releases, media kit, letterheads, seminars, etc. are tools used by PR firms to communicate the message. Advertising, on the other hand, uses broadcast media like, newspaper, magazine, the Television, websites to communicate the news. Visual, auditory and print are the main tools of advertising.
  4. Public relation is considered more personal than advertising, just because there is a direct link between the speaker or the owner of the message and the receiver of the message. Advertising is said to be non-personal because, people are always passive while receiving it and the person who is communicating the message is not present there in flesh and blood. He or she is there, near receiver, but just in ideas.
  5. You can get PR for free (though not very likely), but seeing the price attached with media-space, you cannot get advertising for free.
  6. Public relation is indirect mode of communication. It creates a stage for direct communication like advertising to step in to inform about the company’s plan.

I believe the distinctions I have found here are not the only ones. Please help me in getting more points. Use the comment box below to leave your suggestions, feedbacks and tips.

SEO SIMPLIFIED: SEO Myth Buster – II

The post titled, SEO SIMPLIFIED: SEO Myth-Buster, turned me not just into an SEO myth buster, but, it made me an SEO myth hunter too. In this article, we will be continuing our myth busting journey from where we left in the last article. This will be a concluding article on the most common SEO myths, so let’s begin debunking some more myths.

Myth 6: My Website is too big to be optimized my me

Last night, I woke up with a dream to make a castle tomorrow for myself, my would-be wife and my family. The very next day, I went out, collected the material needed and built the beautiful mansion. Amazing, isn’t it? Well, not exactly. Did you believe the story? The point is not whether I can afford to build a mansion or not, the point is whether I can build it in a day or not. I cannot, even if I have all the money and resources of this world. Rome wasn’t build in a day, and nor will your website.

Start with optimizing the most important page of your website, and then follow the path led during the brainstorming (planning) for the website. Start doing this, as early as you can, and always keep in mind that each and every page of your website is a doorway through which your visitor can enter your house (website) or leave it. Hence, make the doorway as inviting as you possibly can make, and keep your home as pleasing to stay as humanly possible.

Myth 7: Meta tags are elixir.

Once upon a time, meta tags were very important, they were jewel of SEO crown, but that time is long gone. Blame it on spam, meta tags are losing their importance in search engine optimization process. I am not saying that meta tags are not important at all. All I am saying is, meta tags are no more “the thing”. Meta tags are still an important part of SEO but not the most important thing.

Myth 8: Black Hat SEO will pay my bills

People believe using doorway page (for Google), keyword stuffing, cloaked content, hidden texts, etc. are the best way to get search engine ranking spikes. Forget about its being “the best way”, let me break the bad news, this is not even a way to go. Black Hat SEO never pays!

Myth 9: I am superstar, I do not need SEO

Well, if you are a superstar then definitely you do not need to optimize your site, but first let me know, you are a superstar in what capacity?

If you think you became a star on the Internet and you do not need SEO anymore because you are already featuring on the first page of Google, Yahoo and MSN SERPs then let me remind you of the God’s word, “Organic”. The listing that you got is organic in nature, and as soon as you stop working on keeping it that way, your website will slip down the drain, and some unknown kid on the block will flash his crown.

Myth 10: I can make my place felt in any SERP just in days

You cannot do that, even if you are a real superstar. Search Engine Optimization might sound cool (you bet it is) and fun to do exercise, but believe me it is not no-sweat job. You will have to burn the metaphorical mid-night oil to make the search engines work for you. The amount of time it will take to reach on the cover page (the first page) of SERP depends upon the nature, competition and search volume of the keywords your site is optimized for, and the effort you put in to bring it forward.

Monetizing your Blog

Blogging has revolutionized the World Wide Web. It has changed the face of the Internet, not just cosmetically, but structurally as well. Thanks to blogging, the Internet now in true sense has democratized the knowledge. It has not only democratized the knowledge, but it has also democratized the way to make living sharing wisdom and knowledge on the Internet.

Gone are the days, when creating a website and making money from it was not meant for everyone. The technological knowhow was missing, but blogs or web logs (as it was initially called) changed everything. Now, through blogs not only you can share your expertise with others, but you can also earn in the process. In this article, we shall discuss about some of the blog monetization strategies that you can use for your blog as well.

Pay per Click (PPC) or Cost per Click (CPC) Advertisements

Google Adsense is the most popular and most used PPC advertisement option. If you adopt this blog monetization option, you will be paid a certain amount for the clicks the resultant ad will receive on your page. The ads (text and image banners) are contextual, which means the nature of an advertisement will depends upon the content on the webpage.

Beside Google Adsense, Bidvertiser and AdToll are other PPC option to exercise.

Cost per Thousand Ads (CPM Ads)

CPM ads pay you for the impressions your adverts will get. Your visitors don’t require to do any clicking to make the advertiser pay you. If you have adopted CMP strategy on your webpage than you will be paid on the basis of per 1000 impressions, which means, the more your webpage will be accessed the more you will be paid. The CPM rate can be really low, as low as $0.10 per 1000 visits. Generally, the network that offers CPM ads also offers CPC ads

AdBrite and ValueClick Media are major CPC/CPM advertisement providers.

Cost per Action (CPA) or Affiliate Ads

Cost per action advertisement, which at times is also referred as lead generation, and affiliate advertisements are the highest paying advertisement options on the Internet. To get paid, your user needs to not only click the ad, but he or she needs to register himself/herself on the landing page or make some purchase there.

Amazon Associates, Commission Junction, and Adfish are the main players in this category.

Text Link Ads

Text links work the same way as do the option we talked above. For text links to show up, you set aside a dedicated space, and as soon as the space gets purchased, text links starts showing up.

Link Worth, Text-Link-Ads and TNX.net are major players in this league

In-text advertising

The best part of in-text advertisement is that it doesn’t require any dedicated screen estate (virtual real estate), and the worst part of this type of advertisement is the annoyance some users feel by the presence of this kind of advertisements. If you opt for this option, Ads are attached to the text in the content of the webpage (the keywords with advertisement link generally have single or double underlines.). Some in-text advertisement will show a pop-up on the mouse hover as well.

Kontera and Vibrant Media are the big fishes of In-text advertising.

RSS Feed Ads

Not everyone will visit your website to read what you have to offer, rather those who like to read your writings will seldom visit your website. They, most likely, will use any RSS reader to access your feeds; hence, you should not leave this channel untapped. I know, there are not much RSS Feed advertisement options available, but soon there will be.

Feedburner and Pheedo help you monetize your feeds.

SEO SIMPLIFIED: SEO Myth-Buster

We are done with the lessons on the on-page SEO optimization, and if you are following the series from the beginning (Click here to go back from where we started), you must be knowing by now, what search engine optimization is all about. Indeed, there are stuffs like link-building, back linking, deep-linking etc. still left to discuss, which we will do in the course of time, but still, I believe, this is the right time to debunk some of the common search engine optimization myths.

Myth 1: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) or website optimization is Rocket Science.

Well, you already know this, and you also no it’s not that difficult. And Rocket Science, forget about it! This is not even 1% closer to it. The idea that you have learned so far, and the ones you will be learning in the coming articles, is what SEO is. The things we have talked about are only the ground on which any SEO empire is or will standing.

Myth 2: I am lagging too far behind. I will never catch up, and cannot learn to optimize my website.

Well, you cannot learn to fly a kite, by reading a book on aerodynamics, velocity of wind, wind power, or by studying the flight mechanics, or anatomy of a kite. You will have to take a kite and try to fly it, if you want to learn to fly a kite. Similarly, reading 32-volume encyclopedia on SEO will not teach you search engine optimization. You will have to practice it to learn it. Learn the basics and take the kite out to give it a flight.

Myth 3: I am done with submitting my site to search engines. It is time to party now.

Not yet! By submitting your site to all the search engines and web directories, you have just taken a baby-step in the direction of making your site popular. There are many more things to do. Do not hang your sword and armor, not yet, the war is still not over. By submitting your site to the search engines and website directories, you have just announced to the world that you are also there. It will take some effort and time in reaching to the first row, and much more time to get the VVIP seat.

Myth 4: Indeed, it is too much time consuming.

I saw that coming, but the answer is no, it’s not. And by the way, if you have the basics of SEO in place then you must be writing the content from different perspective, designing the website according to SEO norms and even keeping the source code in sync with SEO, so you have already devoted a fair share of time. No more sweat. Well, not exactly. A bit more sweat.

Myth 5: Do I have to submit it to 1000 search engines? Or the number is 1,000? Man, this search engine submission is a hell lot of work.

No, you do not have to, and for the starter, there isn’t 1000 search engines, forget about 10,000. If anyone is asking you to pay him to do all the search engine submission then you better watch out. Submitting your website in Google, Yahoo, MSN, and one or two local search engines is enough. If you want you can add Ask, AOL etc. as well, but in no way you need to submit your site in all the search engines. Having said that, I must add submitting your website in every possible search engine will not hurt, but do you have that kind of time?

SEO SIMPLIFIED: Optimizing the Page Title

Think about it: how many times have you found yourself drawn by the clever use of a headline (or page title) towards an otherwise boring article or blog-post? A headline (or a page title in terms of SEO) plays an important role in building the visitors as well as the search engine bots’ interest in the given article. A page title plays a very pivotal role in search engine optimization process. In this article, I will be sharing some tips on how to optimize page title for a better ranking and maximum click-throughs.

  1. The first 60-70 characters of your headlines are only visible in Google’s search result. Hence, If your title goes past the 70 character limit, the search engine in question will cut the title on 69th character. I have two things to say in this regard: (1) do not make your page title more than 70 characters long, and (2) if you do so, keep the important words towards the beginning of the page title.
  2. In the course of following the first suggestion, do not end up stuffing your page title with useless keywords (just because they are important for your website), but instead, try using some modifier with any one keyword to succinctly tell the story. After all, the end user of the article is your colleague, not the search engine spider.
  3. Explore your creative side and use the page title as a window of opportunity to maximize click-through traffic.
  4. A good page title should aim to evoke an emotional response.
  5. Use variety. Do not make every page title of your website look all the same. This will not only pull more visitors for you, but this will also help you gauge what works and what doesn’t.
  6. The words used in page title should be different from the words you use in meta description tag. (To read more, click on SEO SIMPLIFIED: Writing Meta Tags.)

I hope the tips suggested above will help in getting more traffic to your website. I am done with what I had to say on this topic. Can you help me in finding more ways to optimize a page title? Write your views and suggestions in the comment box. Looking forward to see it!
